Daisy Planting Guide

When to Plant Daisy Seeds

Daisies are like the overachievers of the flower world—they’re almost impossible to mess up! You can plant them in spring, summer, or fall. Most gardeners simply toss those seeds directly into the garden like confetti at a celebration.

Where to Plant Daisy Seeds

Find a sunny spot that’s as sheltered as a secret garden, with rich, well-drained soil that would make any plant feel right at home. Mixing in some compost is like giving your daisies a gourmet meal! Most daisies are perennial, meaning they’ll bloom in their second year after spending the first year focusing on building a solid root system—kind of like college for flowers!

How to Plant Daisy Seeds

Ready, set, sow! Daisy seeds love light, so be gentle when planting. Grab a hoe or rake and give the soil a little scratch—just enough to wake it up! Toss those seeds on top and, if the local birds are being nosy, cover them lightly with about 1/8 inch of soil. Press the seeds in by stepping on them (a fun way to get some exercise!) or rolling over them with a garden roller. Keep the soil moist until those little guys start germinating in about 14 days. If you’re feeling fancy, a general fertilizer can be sprinkled in during the early growth stages, switching to a high phosphorus fertilizer right before blooming for those show-stopping flowers!

How to Care for Daisies

Daisies are low-maintenance pals who only ask for average amounts of water. If your garden’s been feeling dry, give them a drink! As the blooms start to fade, be a responsible gardener and deadhead those spent flowers—snip the stems below the foliage and encourage a second (or even third!) blooming. Your daisies will thank you with a floral encore!

Once they’re established, some daisy varieties can be divided every three to four years to keep things cozy and avoid overcrowding. Just dig up clumps, separate them, and replant the little flower squads. And if you live somewhere cold, don’t forget to give your daisies a cozy blanket of mulch for winter—everyone loves a warm hug!
