Freesia Planting Guide

When to Plant Freesia Bulbs

Indoor freesia enthusiasts, plant your bulbs (or corms, if you’re fancy) in autumn for winter blooms that brighten those grey months. Want early summer flowers indoors? Start ‘em up in January to March. Or wait until March or April if you’re using a greenhouse. For outdoor gardeners, aim to plant these divas between April and June, once the frosty villain has made its exit.

Where to Plant Freesia Bulbs

Freesias don’t ask for much—just some well-drained soil, a bit of warm sunshine, and a touch of cool night air to keep things fresh. Got a raised bed? Even better! These plants prefer the high life, where drainage is primo, and their exotic charm can be fully appreciated. Whether in pots or in the ground, freesia’s sure to make itself right at home as long as the conditions are just right.

How to Plant Freesia Bulbs

Time to prepare the red carpet…or, well, at least eight inches of nicely loosened soil. Plant your bulbs in small clusters, about two inches deep and two inches apart, with the pointy side facing up (they like to be upright, thank you very much). Some gardeners like to give them a little pre-planting spa soak for half an hour, but that’s optional—freesias are flexible that way.

How to Care for Freesia

After planting, go easy on the watering—freesias don’t appreciate soggy feet. Once they start sprouting, give them a gentle drink if the rain’s taking a break, but keep the soil just lightly moist. And when summer turns up the heat, these little beauties go dormant, so stop watering and let them rest.

Freesias are a bit delicate, so give them a little support—a bamboo stick or anything sturdy will help them stand tall. When the flowers fade, snip them off at the base, but don’t touch that green foliage! Let the leaves stick around until they turn yellow and shrivel up; that’s when the plant’s working on its next generation of bulbs.

Oh, and freesia isn’t a fan of the cold—so when winter rolls around, bring them inside or say goodbye till next year!
