Lupine Planting Guide

When to Plant Lupine Seeds

Time to roll up your sleeves! The ideal time to plant lupine seeds is in early spring after the last frost has bid farewell. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also plant them in the fall—just make sure it’s about six weeks before the first frost. This gives the seeds a chance to chill out and prepare for a fabulous spring awakening!

Where to Plant Lupine Seeds

Lupines love to bask in the sun, so pick a spot with full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours a day. They’re not too picky about soil, but they prefer well-draining, sandy or loamy soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Give them some room to stretch—these beauties can grow anywhere from 1 to 4 feet tall, so make sure they have space to shine!

How to Plant Lupine Seeds

Before planting, give those seeds a little love by soaking them in water for about 24 hours to encourage germination. Then, plant them about 1/2 inch deep, spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart. Just sprinkle them in the soil, give them a gentle pat, and let the sun do its thing—no need to cover them up too much!

How to Care for Lupines

Once your lupines are growing, water them regularly, especially during dry spells. They appreciate moist soil, but be careful not to overdo it—nobody likes soggy roots! After the blooming season, deadhead spent flowers to encourage a second round of blooms and keep your plants looking sharp. If your lupines start to get leggy, don’t be shy—give them a little trim to promote bushier growth. With just a bit of care, your lupines will reward you with a colorful display and a chorus of buzzing pollinators!
